The City of Charlotte partnered with Mecklenburg County and Charlotte Center City Partners (CCCP) to implement the Uptown On-Street Recycling Program. This program aims to motivate and prompt individuals to recycle by installing 35 recycling receptacles (paired with existing trash receptacles) along Tryon Street. Project funding includes the purchase of the recycling receptacles and collection services for 2.5 years. The program targets pedestrians who live, work, and visit Uptown Charlotte. To kick off the project in August 2010, CCCP, in partnership with Coca-Cola and Harris Teeter implemented a "Get Caught Green Handed" promotion to encourage Uptown workers, residents and visitors to place recyclable items in the new on-street recycling receptacles.
City Solid Waste Services crews who are already assigned to perform other maintenance duties in Center City service the recycling receptacles weekly and during special events. In total, City crews will likely make approximately 25 special trips to the County's recycling facility per year to specifically dump the Center City recycled materials. Since the program launched in August 2010, 14.84 tons of recyclable materials have been collected in the Center City recycling receptacles.
