The Dynamic Vehicle Wayfinding and Parking Guidance Signage
project will reduce vehicle miles traveled by providing parking,
event and travel information on Variable Messaging Signage. Travel
Information will be provided with "real time" parking availability
and flexibility to support various venues' special event
information. This project includes:
• Four large dynamic message signs
to efficiently direct visitors to the most accessible parking
facility from all approaches to Charlotte's Center City, completing
the Vehicular Wayfinding System. These signs will be linked to the
Charlotte Department of Transportation's Traffic Control Center and
will provide "real- time" parking availability, direct traffic
to/from major events and advise the public of street
• Expansion of the parking guidance
system through dynamic "real-time" signs at 15 parking decks with
signs to report parking availability to reduce motorists driving
around to find parking.
The Vehicle Wayfinding and Parking Signage project can be
enhanced to add static signs as well as dynamic messages to direct
electric vehicle motorists to charging stations when implemented in
public parking areas. Energy estimates include a reduction of
75,000 gallons of fuel annually, based on average travel distances

purposes to Charlotte's Center City. Fully completed, the entire
system will eliminate 1.7 million miles of driving per year,
reducing annual greenhouse gas emissions by 670 metric tons.
